The net has been saying that Idris Elba should take over as the new Bond, and don't get me wrong, as amazing as he would be, I've been saying since day one that we don't need a black Bond. We simply need to depict a more diverse spy world as a whole. StudioCanal heard the voice of those who want to see more POC (people of colour) and produced their soon to be released thriller; Bastille Day.`
What does this mean in the long run? Well, for so long, one of the main arguments for not having a black lead star in a major franchise has been; they don't draw in viewers overseas. A notion that Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with it's black male and white female lead, destroyed by grossing 1 Billion in foreign box ticket sales (currently sitting at $2,028,057,964 overall, as of Feb 15th 2016). This, to me, is a pretty clear indicator that foreign box offices are ready for more diversity and greater chances need to be taken.
Lets hope that Star Wars: TFA & Bastille Day are the beginning of a trend that is here to stay.
